Some updates on Android over the past few months:

In October 2011, Android has exceeded iPhone/iPod Touch
in total app downloads. The report claims to think
that the main reason behind the jump is because Android
is completely open-sourced. With developers, this most
likely is the biggest reason why iOS has fallen behind in the
total app downloads. Another reason, a lot of consumers were
waiting for the release of the iPhone 4s, which had not come
out at the time of the study. Another factor includes the appeal
of Android over iPhone because Android is more versatile in
the apps that it offers whereas Apple controls every app in the Apple
App Store.

A study back in the first of December shows that Android does not
crash as muchas iOS. The 15 day study showed that about 3/5 to
2/3 of all Android and iOS crashes are iOS crashes. The results of
this study have thrown peopleoff because the popular belief was
that iOS was the more stabile of the twoOS’s. But in fact the opposite
is true. The biggest percentage of OS crashes was from iOS’s version
5.0.1, which consisted of about 28.6% of all the recorded crashes.
The largest Android OS to crash was version 2.3.3 and the crash
percentage was about 3.9%. Although this make shock a lot of iPhone
users who don’t seem to have a lot of problems with apps or OS crashes,
thestudy consisted of about a 3 to 1 iPhone to Android ratio. So in
this sense, the percentages may be skewed a tad too much in Android’s
favor, but nonetheless the data does show a
favor in Android’s stability over iOS.

As of a report from January, the Android Market now tops over
400,000 apps. In April 2011, the market consisted of about 200,000
apps and that number jumped to about 300,000 only four months
later in August. The number has continued to rise and now at the
end of December 2011, that numberhas now started to exceed 400,000.
Thefactors that have contributed to gigantic increase in apps is the
open-source nature of Android and Google not being as stringent
when allowing apps to be sold in the Android market. Another
factor is that about 68% of the apps within the market are free.
This has contributed not only to Android increasing in popularity
among consumers but also to the increase in quality of apps.
