G is for Google and A is for Alphabet

If you've forgotten your abc's recently, or maybe just wanted to teach someone else, and decided to search 'alphabet' in Google, you may have come across something unexpected...

You would really think that the first result would be a video result from Sesame Street where the Cookie Monster talks about how "C is for COOKIE" or something along those lines. Look at the URL on that first result, abc.xyz. How peculiar!

If you following the link you'll be led to a website describing where Larry Page describes a mass restructuring of Google and all its resources. Alphabet has been created to be a holding company for all things Google. Google itself will now become one of the child companies, and it will encompass the search engine itself, Android, Chrome, Maps, Youtube as well as Google Photos and Google Now. Don't worry, nothing crazy should be happening with any of those for now.

This may all seem like boring information that will only be important for investors and other people who like to stand in the line of fire on Wall Street and yell at each other in ways that only investors and members of the stock exchange can understand. But I promise it gets more exciting than that.

Larry Page is quoted as saying, "Sergey and I are seriously in the business of starting new things". No doubt this is true; for the past few years Google has been known for their 'moonshots', experimenting with driverless cars, virtual reality, things of the like. But it's all been contained under Google's name. With the new restructuring, TONS of these projects now have their own companies! Things like:

Calico: Alphabet's most life-altering project...literally. Google and the chairman of Apple-Arthur D. Levinson- have teamed up to form a company that is completely concerned with extending human life. Starting with a cure for cancer, they view this as "not as big a change as you might think". This company is looking to cure disease, in the broadest sense of the word.

Fiber: This has been in the works for a while, but this is essentially Alphabet's internet service. They offer 1gb/s speeds as well as cable service. The service has no caps on use, and subscribing comes with a terabyte of Google Drive cloud storage. Their service also boasts being able to record up to 500 hours and 8 shows simultaneously.

Nest Labs: This company is in the process of completely automating homes. Thermostats that know when you get home and what temperatures you like at certain times of day, lights that turn on in the house as soon as you pull into the driveway, and bacon that starts cooking itself on Saturday morning(ok, that last one I made up. But honestly it's probably not too far off). Described as desiring to make "a more cohesive smart home".

Google X: This is the real out-there company. Driverless cars, drones, interactive contact lenses(at this point, they are designed to monitor glucose levels for people with diabetes. There's already a prototype), and, ultimately, anything that Page and Brin decide they want to chase.

This could mean big things for the future, and it's definitely worth getting excited about. This is just a small overview of Alphabet, I highly suggest looking up it and following along. Who knows what they'll come up with next!
