BACKUP YOUR STUFF!!!

In today's age, we use our computers for everything. Our society uses computers for school (documents, projects, etc.), work (spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, etc.), entertainment (music, photos, videos, etc.), and a lot more. I think it's safe to say that our lives are centered around computers and the data we have store on them makes the world go round. We rely on data more than ever before.

The AV-TEST Institute registers over 200,000 new malicious programs every day. Malicious content is rampant these days and literally anybody can learn how to make a virus to destroy your computer. It just takes one accident to destroy your hard drive and all the data inside of it. If you carry it from one side of the room to the other and drop it, then your computer dies. If you like to drink your morning coffee and the cup slips out of your hand and spills all over your laptop, then your computer dies. Accidents happen because we are human. Some people are just bad people and could purposefully steal your computer. Just as humans fail, technology can fail too. The typical hard drive lasts a little over three years, then it dies. All the precious photos and rocking music you saved to your computer can be gone in seconds. That project that you worked on for three weeks on could be toast if you do not back up your computer. Just do yourself a favor and BACKUP YOUR STUFF!!!

Ways to Backup Your Computer

External Hard Drive:
  • A device that can be plugged into the USB port on your computer and has the ability to automatically backup your computer. It is large enough to save all your files on your computer.
Flash Drive:
  • Similarly to an external hard drive, it plugs into the USB port on your computer. It is much smaller in size, but cannot store quite as many files, and does not have an auto backup feature.
Cloud Storage:
  • This is an online method, so there is no hardware involved. You have an account through a cloud provider that gives you an allotted amount of space to store your files on a company's server. This is a great option because you can sign into any computer and get your data. Cloud services are typically very secure and they continually throw your files on a backup server.
  • Popular cloud service providers: Apple iCloud, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, and DropBox.
M-Drive (Harding Students):
  • Every Harding student is given an m-drive. Harding provides each student with 1GB of storage on a server that you can access from any computer at school. Each student is able to put that m-drive on their personal computer as well. You can save your school work here and Harding constantly re-saves your files on a backup server for added safety.
  • Follow this link to map your m-drive to your personal computer: http://dormnet.blogspot.com/2014/09/how-to-map-your-m-drive.html

Do us all a favor and backup your computer. Data makes the world go round.
