The Fabulous Phablet
Have you ever heard the term phablet before? If you're anything like me, then you read that and procured a mental picture of an iPad covered in glitter. Still confused about what on earth a phablet is? Let me clear a few things up for you:
- The phablet is a phone/tablet mash-up.
- They are classified by their screen size. For a device to be classified as a phablet, the screen size must be between 5 and 7 inches.
- Samsung's Galaxy Note was the pioneer of the market in 2011. It had a screen size of 5.3 inches.
- However, the HTC Advantage (2007) was the first phablet on the market with a screen of 5 inches.
Why is this important? Because Apple is rumored to be releasing one. According to Forbes, Apple has always had a "wait and see" policy when it came to new technologies. They are not the trailblazers. However, they are the revolutionaries. The iPod revolutionized the MP3 market, the iPhone revolutionized the smart phone market, and now the iPhablet (or whatever the name may be) has the potential to revolutionized the phablet market.
The details are scarce, but the screen is rumored to be 5.5 inches. This is smaller than what is currently on the market, but where Apple doesn't live up to its competitors it makes up for in superior quality and software. Hopefully Apple will announce their phablet with the iPhone 6 next week and we can see the phablet market be renewed and take off.
