How to Connect Your Apple TV, Roku, Blue-Ray Player or Other Smart Device

Do you have an Apple TV, Samsung Blue-Ray Player, Roku, or other smart device?  You may have noticed that while the device initially connects to the internet, it isn’t letting you watch your favorite shows or surf the web.  This is most likely because your device is being blocked by SafeConnect.

SafeConnect helps your device communicate with the outside world and decides whether or not that device is compliant and if not, blocks communication and thus your internet connection.

To fix this problem, please call the DormNet help desk at 501-279-4545 and a DormNet Assistant will create a work order for someone to call or stop by your dorm to investigate the problem.

A DNA will most likely ask you for your device’s MAC address (either wired or wireless depending on your preference or capability) and send that information along to be processed.

Don’t know where to find your MAC address?  Here are a few places to try based on your device.

Apple TV
Go to the main menu on your Apple TV, and select "Settings." Here you can find your MAC Address, listed as either the "Wireless ID" or "Ethernet ID" (depending on the connection you are using).

Samsung Blue-Ray Player
From the Home Screen, select settings or the settings icon.
Select network, then network test.
The MAC Address should be listed in the format a1:b2:c3:4d:5e:6f. If it is listed as 00:00:00:00:00:00, please restart the device.

Roku
You can find your device MAC addresses on the bottom or back on your Roku player (depending upon model).   A MAC address is a set of six 2-digit pairs separated by colons (e.g. 00:0D:0A:1H:3G:5C)
Also, alternatively, from the Roku home screen, select settings> player info. The addresses will be listed on-screen.

Google TV
From Settings, select Network, and then Status. Your MAC address will appear on the screen.

Sony Blu-Ray DVD player
Follow the instructions here

TiVo
Press the Menu button on the remote and select Network, and then Manual Setup. The RJ45 and/or Wireless MAC address will appear on the screen.

What is a MAC address anyway?

“A media access control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications on the physical network segment. MAC addresses are used as a network address for most IEEE 802 network technologies, including Ethernet and WiFi.”
