The upgrade that your computer needs. SSD

Many computers start to run very slowly after a couple of years, even if there is a full re installation of the operating system, some machines will never run like they did in their first years. This can happened for various reasons. from the amount of microprocessor power and ram begin too low, to  the machine not being fully compatible with the new programs used on the machine. But most of the time, even Macintosh computers run slow due to the damage on the hard drive. Replacing it can improve drastically how the computer runs, with a small investment a old computer can fell like new again.

Why the hard drive does not last like the other parts?

Most of the computers that are sold come with a HDD or Hard Disk Drive.  This type of drive uses a magnetic storage. To keep it simple, HDD use a moving metal disk that writes data to it using electricity. This method is very efficient at storing huge amounts of data, and noways the price of this types of Drives is super cheap. A 1025GB HDD can be found at less than $50. While economic, HDD's have a problem: the moving parts. Since they move every time they read and write and since the storage is done by a physical change to the metal disk some small parts of the metal disk can become damaged to a point that no more data can be written or read from them. Computers Know about this problem and what they do is ignore that part that is not of use anymore. The problem with this is that eventually there are going to be so many of this useless parts that the machine will have a hard time trying to find good places to put new data, resulting in a very slow computer. This is called Data Degradation. It will be a good idea to read more about this now that you have the basic understanding of this. You can learn more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_degradation

How can I fix a slow computer?

Now that it is known that HDD's are the cause of many computers running slow, replacing it can be a very helpful solution. Buying a hard drive other than a HDD is the way to go. Even though there are Hybrids type of Hard Drives, I personally believe that SDD's are the best investment someone can do regarding Hard Drives upgrades. There is ongoing discussion about this, if you are interested, research a little bit about Hybrid Drives vs SSD's but be sure that while they are different, both are a huge improvement over HDD's.
The price of a SSD goes from $80 for a 150GB Drive. This is a lot more expensive than a HDD and for a good reason.

How Does SSD work?

Solid State Drive or SSD, work completely different from HDD, SSD's store the information in many integrated chips, to keep it simple, imagine a lot of USB flash drives put together to from a big drive. That is a basic picture of how they work. Of course, there is a lot more to it, if you are interested in learning more about them you can do that here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive
By using no moving parts, the writing and reading of data is way faster and the durability of the disk is way longer when reading data from the disk.

This table shows the main differences  between SSD and HDD

With this, we can see that there are many advantages in upgrading to an SSD.
If you think you want to upgrade your computer, talk to a DormNet assistant, while we cannot do that procedure for you since we do not have the equipment to open a computer, we will be happy to instruct you on who to contact for this task.
