Are you studying abroad?
It's amazing how far technology has brought us within the past 30 years. Just think, 30 years ago the average price for a 2 pound Motorola portable phone was $3995. AND it couldn't access the internet let alone send a text message. However, we are in 2018 where the average price for a smartphone is $531 and it can access the internet, send text messages, and still call people. One common problem people run into when studying abroad is not being able to send texts or call people because your cell phone company will not cover you. Fortunately, many cell phone companies now offer extended coverage in Canada, Mexico, and even Europe; but it usually costs more. If you are like me, my cell phone company doesn't offer any plans abroad. Luckily there is a cool app that will allow you to text, call, and even video chat over the internet: WhatsApp.
This app is very simple, but it requires a few things. (1) You must obviously download the app and create an account, (2) the people you are wanting to contact while abroad must also download the app and create an account*, (3) be connected to wifi to send/receive texts, etc.
There are many added benefits to this. I am sure you will make friends abroad and you will most likely not be able to text/call them after you leave their country. If they don't already have WhatsApp, tell them to download it so you can remain in contact. Fortunately, WhatsApp is already huge in other countries and many people already use it as a preferred means of contact. So, staying connected with friends will be a breeze.
*iPhone users can still use iMessage and FaceTime if connected to wifi, so this might help you narrow your list of people you need to contact.
