National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Russian Hackers, Chinese Cyberwarfare and SpaceForce, oh my!

According to the Department of Homeland Security, October is officially National Cybersecurity Awareness Month: a spooky month for a spooky topic.

It seems like things being hacked, leaked, or otherwise out of commission is more or less par for the course these days. Did you attempt to access YouTube on Tuesday? Yup, YouTube was completely down for over an hour in several countries on multiple continents on 10/16.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month has been around since 2003 and its stated goal is to “ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online, while increasing the resiliency of the Nation during cyber-threats.”

There are many different ways to ensure you remain safe online ranging from very simple, to very advanced.

Google is even offering a free Cybersecurity checkup during the month of October as part of NCSAM 2018. You can access it by searching "google security checkup" and clicking the top link.

If I had to offer a single piece of advice it would be:

Password sticky-notes on computers are ALWAYS a bad idea. Don't do it.

Happy National Cybersecurity Awareness Month!
