PlayStation 5: Promises and Skepticism

Within the last couple of weeks, Sony finally released details on their next generation of PlayStation consoles. While it has no official title, what everyone is calling the PlayStation 5 seemingly raises the bar significantly when it comes to the video game experience. According to Sony, the PlayStation 5 will support 8K resolutions, a solid-state drive that allows for greater speed and performance, backward compatibility to play PS4 games, and an AMD chip at its core with a built-in unit for 3D audio.

While no release date has been set, the earliest we will potentially see this new console will probably be 2020. Sony has also confirmed that it will not be a digital-only console, meaning you will still be able to insert physical disks to play your favorite games. We still do not have any physical designs of the system to get an idea of what it or the controllers will look like, and we also do not have a price range yet. On the latter topic, the PS4 lead system architect stated in a tweet that it would have a price "appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set."

While the specs on this new system sound appropriate for a new generation, some people are still skeptical of the details released up until this point because of Sony's past blunders in this area. Features such as backward compatibility were also promised for the PlayStation 4 but were only available in the earliest model of the console. Critics list off several other promises that Sony has broken; however, we can only hope that the PlayStation 5, or whatever its name may be, lives up to the incredibly high expectations people have already set for the next generation of consoles.
