Installing SafeConnect on New M1 Macs

M1 Macs are here to stay! Apple made a big update to both software and hardware, but how does this impact Harding Students?. Well If you get one of these new computers and live in the dorms, there are a couple of extra steps you need to follow in order to have internet access.

The first thing you need to do is to download Roseta 2. This program is made to translate other programs made for intel architecture. This will allow you to run almost all the programs that have not yet been updated.

You can install it in one of the buildings that does not have SafeConnect, for example the Student Center or the Library.

1. To install it you need to open Terminal. To do this you can simply search for it in the applications folder or search for it using spotlight search. Then you will need to type the next line of code:

1
/usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license
This will automatically install Rosetta 2 and will run in the background.

2. The next step is to download an antivirus software. If you already have an antivirus software running you can skip to 3. The most recommended antivirus in Dormnet is AVG. It is a free antivirus that updates in the background and you almost forget that is there. You can download it by going to this page:

After you download the .dmg file, you will have to run it and it will guide you though the installation process. When prompted open system preferences and click "allow" on AVG extension. Then in that same page go to the label that says "privacy" and search for "full disk access", and click on the checkbox for avg. This should allow AVG to protect all files in your computer.

3. Then you will need to install SafeConnect. If you tried this before, the installer will be in your downloads folder, but if not you will need to go to your dorm and download it from there. To trigger it, once you are in your dorm type in safari

This should take you to the SafeConnect page and you just need to follow the instructions of the installer. After installed you should now be able to browse the internet.

If you have any problems during this process, feel free to contact Dormnet or come to the Help Desk in the Admin Building.
