Apple iTV?
If you've been checking the Online Apple Store lately, you'll notice that the fruit company has lent a sizable amount of site real estate to the little black puck streamer known as the Apple TV. As of January 28th 2014, the Apple TV has graduated from the "hobby"/accessory line to full on product featurette, via the tab on the top of Apple's website.
The Apple TV is Apple's stab at doing to TV in 2010 what the iPod did to music in 2001.
First released in 2007, experts deemed the Apple TV a dud. But after releasing the Apple TV 3 in 2010, it was able to contend with top streaming devices on the market, such as the likes of Roku and the Xbox 360. The iPod market is dwindling, however, while the Apple TV continues to be updated with new content and channels.
The Apple TV gaining its own product page is pretty valuable. According to rumors from the the Apple blog 9to5mac, Apple could be releasing a fourth update to the streaming puck, which could include an integrated wireless router and support for games (using iPods, iPhones and iPads as controllers). Rumors are also pointing to Apple going even further as to introducing a television set, dubbed the "iTV".
Credit is lent to these rumors via Apple's Q4 2013 earnings call, subsequent interviews, and the updated website. Promoting the Apple TV could possibly be to raise awareness to consumers about the Apple TV before introducing the long rumored Apple iTV. With news about Roku announcing their own Roku TV set, all hints point to an update.
The question is not whether Apple is working on a TV, its WHEN it will be released.
Apple has managed to conquer your computer screens via its Mac lineup of desktops, laptops, and OS X updates. Apple has conquered the screen in your pocket and on our desk via its iPhones/iPods/iPads in addition to iOS. The only field left is TV.
