Office 365 for Android Phones
Recently, Harding has obtained a "right to use" Microsoft Office 365 for all currently enrolled Harding Students. PLEASE NOTE that this is not a permanent license for Office software -- it is only a right to use it while you are a currently-enrolled student. The right to use should last over the summer, but if you are no longer enrolled to be a student here at Harding, around the start of the next school year all the documents you created with your Office 365 account will become read-only and you will be prompted to buy the software to renew your right to use it.
Currently, the student accounts of Office 365 that Harding has will allow you to install Office 365 on 5 devices with your single account. Supported devices are currently Windows 8 Tablets, Windows 8 RT devices, iPhones, iPads, and Android phones. We have been told that they plan to support Android tablets sometime in the future.
This instructional article will guide you through the process of downloading and installing the Office 365 software on an Android phone. To start the process, log in to Pipeline and navigate to the Student tab. Down in the bottom right of the page will be a link that says "Install Office on my Device." Click on this link and then look for the link that says "Log in to Office 365"
You will then be taken to a page that looks like this with a gear icon in the upper right-hand corner. After dismissing the two informational pop-ups on the page, click on the gear icon. A drop-down menu will be displayed that has two options in it. Click on the one that says "Office 365 Settings."
The link takes you to a page that looks like this with much of your account summary information on the right-hand side of the page. Click on the link that says "Software."
At first, the site tells you that "You can only install Office on a PC or MAC," but don't let that fool you! There is another link on the page that says "Phone & Tablet." That is the link you actually want to use.
After clicking this link, the page should look like this. Choose your device by clicking the appropriate link.
This will take you to a page with a drop-down menu and some icons like the one seen below. If you selected the wrong device by accident, you can simply choose the correct one from the drop-down menu instead of having to go back a page. Click on the link that says "get app."
You will be taken to a page that looks like the one below. Under the big orange "Office Mobile" logo, there is a blue link that says "Get the app" with an arrow next to it. Click this link and you are directed to the Office Mobile app in your device's version of the app store.
Click the "Install" button, accept any terms of agreement/permissions that the application needs, and wait for the software to be downloaded and installed on your device.
You will then be taken through a "virtual tour" of sorts where they show you some of the features of the app. At the end of the tour, click the "Get started" button and you should see a splash screen with a loading circle saying that it is connecting.
You then need to sign in with your Harding account information, including the "@harding.edu" part of your email address.
Next you will be told that they "need a little more help," so click on the icon that says that your email account is an "Organizational account" since your Harding account is, after all, a university/school account.
After you click this link, you will be prompted to enter a password for your account. This is your Harding account password, just like you would use to sign in to Pipeline or other Harding services.
Once it finishes signing in, you should see a page that has a few sample documents on it (and for some reason, they seem to be in French on my device). At this point, you should be able to view these documents or even make, edit, or view your own.
To make a new document, simply click on the icon on the far right that has a sheet of paper with a plus sign on it.
By clicking on the folder icon in the middle and selecting the "Add Account" link, you can connect to a OneDrive account, an Office 365 account, or a Sharepoint account.
That should be all you need to get started on Office Mobile! Enjoy!
