i0S9 (a.k.a. Time to Update Your iPhones Again!)
It's that time of year when Apple releases all of the new operating software updates and phone updates and anyone who technologically resistant gets very confused and frustrated (roommates, I'm looking at you). In order to help with the confusion and frustration, here is a definitive guide for i0S9 and how to update your phones.
What are the new features in i0S9?
Apps
- News, which replaces Newstand but works pretty much the same way, brings newspapers and magazines to life: beautiful editorial layouts, interesting typography, and vibrant colors abound in a smart app that pulls forward stories that you are interested in.
- Notes now allows a checklist format and small sketches, perfect for visual people. You can add photos and maps to any notes you are jotting. You can also add to your notes from any app!
- Maps shows public transportation (handy for travelers!) and points of interest around your location. So if you're really hungry for a burger but Little Rock is still new to you, this will be great!
- Apple Wallet and iCloud have both been updated to include more organization.
iPad Performance
- iPad now has Multitasking, which allows users to have two screens up at the same time, slide between apps, or have a picture down in the corner (for FaceTiming). This is great for productivity!
Intelligence
- The keyboard has more shortcuts and predicted text has been updated.
- Siri is smarter! Search is updated to be more intuitive and Siri can now take more complicated commands, like searching through photos and looking up sports scores.
Foundations
- Every app has been designed to increase battery life by an hour across the board!
- Apps will work smoother and with more fluency.
- The update is smaller (only taking up 1.3 GB, as opposed to i0S8's 4.58 GB)
- Six digit passcodes are now available on the lock screen and improved security across the board.
- Moving from an Android phone to an iPhone is now easier (tell your friends!).
Updating your iPhone
These updates are only available on iPhones 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, and the new 6s and 6s Plus. For iPad, any iPad after the iPad 2 is available for update, but older iPads won't work as well with the update.Picture in Picture and Slide Over are available on iPad Pro, iPad Air or later, and iPad mini 2 or later. Split View is available on iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 4.
When the time comes, September 16th, every iPhone and iPad user will get a notification that it is time to update their phones. After making sure it is backed up, users can either download the update to their computer via iTunes or download the update to their phones. After it downloads, they can install it to their Apple mobile device, and it's like having a brand new phone!
WARNING: Everyone will be trying to update at the same time, so the internet will slow down! If you are having trouble downloading the update, be patient and it will download eventually. It will take up space on your phone when it downloads, but after it is installed you should be able to put all of your selfies back onto your phone.
If you have any problems, as always come up to the Help Desk and we will do our best to help you!
