WHAT YOU NEED. WHEN YOU NEED IT.
Amazon Dash Button
The largest American Internet-based retailer in America, Amazon.com, Inc., recently released the Dash Button. This button is a Wi-Fi connected device that can be pressed before you run out of your favorite products. Over 100 consumer brands have jumped on the Dash Button bandwagon. The device is paired with a product of your choice, then when pressed it reorders the product you love. This is all setup through the Amazon app on your smartphone. Currently, the buttons are only available for Amazon prime members, however, if Amazon deems it successful then they might open it up to the public.
If you're like me, then you are probably really worried about people around your house pressing the button. I can already picture mischievous children and pesky pets pressing the button, and then my credit card getting charged all of the time. Well do not fear because the Amazon app is here. Once you completely setup the device with through the Amazon app, a notification (if enabled) is sent to your phone every time an order is placed. This allows you to cancel any order before it is shipped. Also, the Dash Button responds only to your first press until an order is delivered - no matter how many times the button is pressed.
Dash Button Details:
- Order Button - This is how you order the product.
- Removable Hook - Button comes with a reusable adhesive and a removable hook to put your button right where you need it.
- Order Status Indicator - The indicator will turn green when an order is successfully place, but will turn red if the order did not go through,
Cons:
- Unreliable Wi-Fi
- The battery will fail unexpectedly
- The psychological implications
- This is creating extreme consumerism within our culture
- Makes you think you cannot live without buying things
- Kills local and major grocery stores financially
- Each button only works with one specific product
Despite the major societal implications this device may have on us, we can definitely see how this product could help us. The Amazon Dash Button totally eliminates a trip to the grocery store, and even eliminates browsing around the Amazon website. This is instantaneous gratification. We can get the products we love with the click of a button and never run out. The sarcastic side of me wants to say, "Get a pair of feet and walk to the local market you lazy Americans..." However, I can see some definite benefits for Amazon, consumer brands, and the busy millennial.
