Somewhere Over the Lollipops Flappy Droids Fly
In 2014 Flappy Bird was all the rage, with over 50 million downloads it was the top selling game in the Apple store. So, it came as quite a shock when Dong Nguyen, the app's creator, felt guilty about the addictive quality of his game and took it off the market. There were a lot of upset fans, but it made the game more of a hit to those who had installed it before the removal. In fact, phones with it pre-installed reached bids of up to $90,000 on Ebay. In the wake of the fans outcry, many companies made rip offs of the game. Google, who developed the operating system for Androids, was one of the companies to run with it, however, they did it in a creative way. Their version, Flappy Droid, is hidden as an Easter Egg in the phone's settings.
On all android phones running the Lollipop operating system, the user can access through the game through these steps:
1) Go to the "Settings" app
2) Scroll down to "About phone"
3) Tap on the "Android Version" several times fast. This will cause a round ball to appear on your screen.
4) Tap the round ball and a lollipop will appear.
5) Tapping the 'pop will just change the color, but if you press and hold it you will be taken to Flappy Bird. Here you can guide android's mascot, BugDroid, through a obstacle course of lollipops.
Google has made other Easter eggs in it's software, so even if you don't have lollipop or an Android there are other Google secrets to explore.
Next time you're taking a break between classes and feeling nostalgic about Flappy Bird, pull out your android and hit up this Easter egg, you may just find you like it more than the original.
