Are we there yet?
It has been nearly 3 weeks since an autonomous car, owned by Uber, was responsible for the death of a 49 year old woman. While this event is terribly tragic, it could help to teach us a valuable lesson about technology.
Technology is a wonderful thing and it has rapidly advanced over just a small amount of time. In the 90s, we were using VHS tapes and flip phones and now we can phones built into watches and cars that drive themselves. But what about all the things that can go wrong? Are we truly at the point were we can fully trust technology to do certain tasks for us? It is wonderful that we have these options, but are they ready. Should we really put our full trust in these technologies that are basically still in their infancy. Time will need to pass a little further, I believe, before we can start trusting these new technologies. As the old saying goes, "Trust is earned, not given."
While I believe that driverless cars will be the mode of transportation in the near future, I don’t believe we are there quite yet. There have been several promising developments in this field, especially by Tesla, and I wholehearted look forward to the day that we do have this luxury.
