4K? Is it for you?

4K is the UHD resolution that most TVs and computer monitors are transitioning to nowadays. This simply means that the screen has 3840 × 2160 pixels (that’s about 4x as many pixels as a 1080p screen). This allows for a higher quality of image to be displayed. But is it worth it??

At this point in time, I would say that it is worth it. More and more media is becoming available in 4K resolution. Some streaming services are now offering plans to stream in 4K and iTunes, for instance, allows their HD quality movies and TV shows to stream in 4K if your device supports it. With some services, like Netflix, you can opt to upgrade to a higher package to unlock 4K streaming but are limited in what is available (Netflix primarily offers its own content in 4K with some third party media available).

The devices that support this are becoming more advanced and cheaper. They now typically offer High Dynamic Range (HDR) support as well as a way to upscale lower quality media in a way that preserves the sharpness and quality of the image. This allows even simple 1080p and 720p video to be viewed in amazing quality. Other devices, such as the Xbox One X, have support for 4K and HDR. These allow you to play newer games at greater quality and allow for a more immersive view of your games.
So if you are concerned with getting the highest quality available and are willing to shell out a little more for that new TV, I would definitely recommend getting a 4K TV versus a lower resolution. Keep in mind, however, that not all content will be available in 4K yet and you may need to purchase new cords and devices to benefit the most from the higher resolution.
