Recent News Round-up

1. NVIDIA Purchases ARM.

NVIDIA shocked the world by announcing their purchase of ARM or Advanced RISC Machines for $40 billion dollars. You may have heard about ARM processors lately because Apple recently committed to putting ARM based CPU's in their new line of MacBooks, and ARM based CPUs are found in many phones on the market today. That's great Ian, but what does this really mean for me, the consumer? Well, right now... nothing! NVIDIA may just be using ARM based CPU cores in their next series of GPU's or they may be gearing up to really enter the CPU market. Only time will tell.

2. Apple reveals new Apple Watches and iPads, but no new iPhone?

Apple recently held their September event where they typically announce their Fall product lineup. While the presentation included the introduction of Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, and the new iPad Air, notably absent was the iPhone 12 lineup and the much talked about Airtags. It is currently speculated that Apple will be holding another event in October to announce the new iPhones.

3. Amazon reveals their new devices.

Amazon held their September event yesterday where they announced many new products. The biggest announcement was the redesign of the Amazon Echo lineup, the devices which used to be cylindrical, have now become full spheres. This allows for a better and fuller sound, including artificial surround sound. The Echo Dot now has the option for a LED clock to be displayed on the front of the sphere. This makes the device a surprisingly compelling option for an alarm clock. Amazon also announced their competition against Google's Stadia, Amazon Luna. Not much is known about the service at this time, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out for Amazon.
